Jajuan Henderson’s life was forever changed when he was shot and left paralyzed by Trenton police while sitting alone in a parked car armed with nothing more than an iced tea. Yesterday, a Mercer County grand jury concluded that the officers’ actions were “justified.”

While we are disappointed in the judgement, we are far from surprised. We continue to see that despite some laudable policy strides, police culture in New Jersey remains largely characterized by a predatory posture rather than a commitment to public safety. At what point will police and politics stop taking priority over the needs and well-being of the people?
